“PLANNED PETHOOD” YUCATAN MEXICO
Vets from Mexico, USA & other countries come to Yucatan in June for the annual S/N Campaign. The free clinics are sponsored locally by donations from the local & expat community, Planned Pethood, Dr. Antonio Rios, & Dr. Jeff Young, Planned Pethood International. For the last 8 years, these vets + an army of volunteers have S/N’d thousands of companion animals. (Planned Pethood is proud that they are responsible for fixing >100,000 animals in Yucatan.)The local government provides $ for some medical supplies. The average cost of this type of clinic is reportedly $60,000–$70,000 (about $33/animal).
Volunteers are critical to their work.

FREE S/N’s HONOR FORD PETERSEN
The 6th annual FREE S/N day was held Feb 25, 2018 @ the Alicia Pet Care Center in Orange Co. CA. Each of these FREE S/N days has been held in memory of Ford Petersen who died in Feb, 2013, at age 21, from a congenital heart condition. He had spent 4 summers working @ the Center & had planned to attend veterinary school @ UC Davis. In the event’s 6 yrs, Dr. Matthew Wheaton & his staff have S/N’d nearly 300 dogs & cats. “We are honored to give back in his name and to allow for his life to make a positive impact on dozens of families every year we put on this event.” Full story & photos: https://www.ocregister.com/2018/02/26/pet-owners-from-across-orange-county-win-free-spay-and-neuter-surgeries-for-their-companions/

HIGH VOLUME CLINIC PUT TO TEST
A 6yr study of 113,906 S/N’s @ a Florida S/N clinic following specific protocols found a canine mortality rate of 0.9 per 10,000 surgeries. For Cats, mortality rate was 5 per10,000. The research echoed findings from the human literature re the importance of specialized skills, volume of practice & lack of interruption as predictors of better outcomes. The article says despite the fact that an estimated 83% of pet dogs & 91 % of pet cats are S/N’d, only about 10% of pets entering shelters have been S/N’d. https://sheltermedicine.vetmed.ufl.edu/2018/04/18/study-are-high-quality-high-volume-spay-neuter-clinics-safe/

NECESSITY- MOTHER OF INVENTION!
Jersey City NJ’s Liberty Humane Society (LHS) has a strict S/N policy for its adoptable animals but, until now, there were no low-cost S/N options for them in Hudson County. LHS had to transport its adoptable animals up to 80 miles to their closest partner facility, a big stress for staff & animals, requiring an entire day. Jersey City’s “Exchange Physical Therapy Group” raised > $120,000 allowing LHS to purchase a specialized, S/N RV, which will service LHS and others in need. More@ www.libertyhumane.org/spayneuter
