PUERTO RICO’S PROMISED BIG NEWS !
In April we heard hints of a “massive coalition to S/N & Vaccinate tens of thousands of dogs & cats in PR in the year ahead.” We now know more, as explained by the HSUS. Their latest effort is an initiative to provide high quality/high volume S/N services to more than 20,000 dogs & cats in underserved communities across PR over 18 mo. in 2018 & 2019. It’s called Spayathon for Puerto Rico. Each animal treated will also receive rabies, leptospirosis, & other essential vaccinations.As part of this initiative, they will also provide high quality, high volume S/N training for PR’s vets. Once the program ends, the HSUS will donate training equipment to the vets trained & to local organizations.For a list of the 17 coalition partners including the Sato Project & more info:

AHS’S MONMOUTH COUNTY TNR EFFORT
Estimates are that there are more than 10,000 free roaming un-owned cats in Monmouth Co. A TNR initiative is gaining steam due to the efforts of Associated Humane Societies (AHS) Tinton Falls general mgr.Veronica Ehrenspeck & Brian Becker, AHS’s TNR coordinator. Having produced results already, he’s also in the process of meeting w/ officials in more than 20 Monmouth Co. towns, re the benefits of TNR ,which includes S/N & vaccinations, vs euthaniz-ing an otherwise endless stream of cats. AHS funds its program entirely via donations, so there is no cost to towns that participate. Towns see savings since costs of round up, housing & euthanizing strays are eliminated. Implementing a TNR program requires cooperation between a municipality, residents & animal welfare officials. ONE SMALL STEP LEADS TO MUCH MORE
Back in the late 1990s, a young teacher on the staff of a NJ College quietly sought help from Animal Birth Control, Inc to “fix” some strays that the students were feeding. Kittens that emerged over the time before the effort (which today would be called TNR) took full effect were cared for & socialized at the College by students, some in veterinary studies, providing essential kitten care & a positive stress relieving experience for the students. This on-site kitten care “Cat Room” was deemed so valuable to students that when the supply of kittens ended due to the success of the effort, the College partnered with “Calling all Cats” Rescue to assist them with kittens emerging from other sites yet to be fully controlled. This Georgian Court “Cat Room” on site program continues today comforting students & caring for & socializing kittens til ready for adoption!
