NON-SURGICAL STERILIZATION ?
Canadian company Avivagen Inc. announced in July it entered into an option to acquire an exclusive license to a technology for the permanent sterilization of female mammals that may eliminate the need for surgical spaying. The invention is a novel & drug-based means of accomplishing this long-standing veterinary goal & could prove effective for companion animal sterilization, control of feral & wild animal populations & certain livestock & human health applications. Avivagen & the inventor, Dr. Duncan Hockley, Dir.of the Veterinary Medical Centre, U. of Saskatchewan believe the technology should be suitable for use in a single-administration, appealing to pet owners, animal control organizations and veterinarians. http://www.avivagen.com/non-surgical-sterilization/
DOG TNR ALSO HELPS LEOPARDS!
In India’s Spiti region, an unlikely threat to wildlife has emerged : feral dogs. Kaza, Spiti’s capital, has just 300 households + as many as 250 feral dogs. During tourist season, the dogs feed on garbage. When season ends, dogs compete with snow leopards for food, sometimes attacking the leopards. Possible disease transmission is also a concern. In Fall 2013, the 1st “animal birth control camp” was held in Kaza. To date, about 1/3rd of the feral dogs have been fixed & 300+ vaccinated, under multi-stakeholder efforts by local govnm’t, NGO & charitable groups. Several more years are needed. Work has also begun on better garbage management, thought to be the root of the problem. http://www.snowleopard.org
