“FIXING” HIPPOS IN COLUMBIA!
In 1981, Columbian druglord Pablo Escobar imported 4 hippos for his personal “zoo”. He was killed in 1993 & his animals removed except the hippos (now #’g >100.)“non-native” & thriving. Despite hippo-protective laws, culling is being considered. So, “Animal Balance” & their Vet, Columbia-based Dr. Naudín,R working w/scient-ists, & vets on a humane solution for wellbeing of people, hippos & ecosystem. Plan is to sterilize > 80% of the hippos in 5 yrs, a huge job. Due to hippos’ size, weight, anatomy,& semi-aquatic habits, safest choice likely tubal ligations & vasectomies. Temporary non-surgical birth control also will be used in project, which will include humane education, done w/ local NGO’s. For more: https://www.animalbalance.org/hippos
