Bowling Green KY.(WBKO)-“The Bowling Green-Warren Co. Humane Society (BGHS), as well as shelters across the US, R grappling w/unprece-dented #s of pets being surrendered & unwanted litters of puppies & kittens flooding their kennels. In recent yrs, shelters have worked w/limited resources to accommodate the alarming rise in the need for their services. Director Lorri Hare has seen the shift 1st hand ...“In the entire 25 yrs I’ve been here, I’ve never seen intakes the way …they’ve been probably in the last 18-24 mos.… And it’s not just here, every single shelter around us & in the entire US is drowning. And the reality is, we can’t adopt our way out of this, we can’t rescue our way out of this.”… Hare shared that the key to combating the rising # of pets being surrendered is a concerted community effort to S/N pets, especially cats & dogs… “We could build a … million $ facility that would house 3 times as many animals, & it’s still going to be full in a month,… So, the reality is, we have to get the over-pet population under control…”

Feral dog populations, a growing threat to snow leopards, livestock, & people, have rapidly increased in snow leopard habitats in India, China & Bhutan. (Dogs & snow leopards can go after the same prey, wild or domestic.) In India’s Spiti Valley, a hot-spot for snow leopard conservation, feral dogs’ #s R up due to more human visitors & inadequate waste management. The feral dog problem is being addressed humanely by S/N & focus on better garbage management. Communities R piloting efforts in collaboration w/regional veterinarians to hold S/N camps. During last yr’s pilot, 2 villages caught & helped S/N 59 feral dogs. This yr, they & 3 others S/N’d 100 dogs, 68% of the 5 villages’ adult feral dogs. Goal is 80-100%. Vets also rabies vaccinate the dogs. Snow Leopard Trust (see link above) members serve as coordinators & para-vets, & provide equipment & supplies. Community members also provide post-surgery care & food for the dogs.
