| Our Mission: To gather, recognize and celebrate the continuing annual commitment of each of our member veterinarians to provide some level of absolutely free spay neuter services to the needy animals of their choice, along with any other free services they choose to provide. |
Our Lucky Stars
We currently have 10 member veterinarians in private practice and 1 spay neuter clinic participating, representing 9 hospitals in 9 NJ towns.
Together these professionals have generously pledged 226 absolutely free spay neuter surgeries and other services for needy animals in 2008:

“SAM” Program Produces results
Many homeless dogs & cats have a better chance now, thanks to the Shelter Animal Medicine (SAM) program at Univ. of Penn Vet partnering with Pa. Animal Care & Control & a group of volunteer vets. In the 1st yr of the program, students S/N’ d 1,250+ animals, greatly increasing chances of adoption. In 2007, the # of S/N’s done per month averaged 650, up from only 35 per month in 2004, prior to the joint effort. The % of homeless pets being saved is also up, from 11% in 2004 to 53% in 2006. Sixty-eight of 105 students in the Class of 2008 will complete the 2 week SAM elective, reflecting a growing interest in SAM careers.
NYC’s Free “Tom Cat Neuter Clinic”
Started in Feb 2008,this program of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals provides free neutering of male cats. The program enlisted Dr. Elizabeth “Buffy” Hartmann, DVM, a retired veterinarian from Southold, NY, who has performed free neuters there in partnership with the North Fork Animal Welfare League. She & NFAW offered to stage a free clinic for up to 30 male cats for the Mayor’s Alliance. Together, they provided the surgeries, vaccinations, supplies and volunteers. Surgeries were done in the neuter van of NYC Animal Care & Control’s Brooklyn Care Center. A heated garage near the van was the holding space. A 2nd clinic was offered in April. Others are planned.
