BELGIUM MANDATES CAT S/N BY 6 MOS
A new law requires almost all of its 2 million cats to be fixed by 2020, a 1st for any country. With just over 11 million people as of 2016, Belgians abandon nearly 30,000 cats yearly. Older cats also will be required to be fixed. Stiff fines will encourage compliance. When they visit a Vet or land in a shelter, cats will be microchipped & reproductive status listed in a central data base. https://iheartcats.com/belgium-becomes-first-country-to-require-most-cats-to-be-spayed-or-neutered/

PUERTO RICO’S PUPPY PLIGHT
From the Sato Project’s March e-news:“In the 12yrs I have been rescuing dogs, I have never witnessed anything like what The Sato Project & other rescuers…..are trying to contend with right now. The calls for help & #s of abandoned dogs have continued to increase since the hurricanes, not decrease. All the while, our heroic vets are still working with generators most of the time. They can only open their clinics on a Ltd schedule, & regularly perform surgeries w/head-lamps.This is our new normal & it requires a new approach. I am incredibly excited to be formulating plans to participate in a massive coalition effort underway to S/N & vaccinate 10’s of thousands of dogs & cats on the island…over the next yr. Pls stay tuned for more details on this effort!” www.thesatoproject.org
GRANT FOR US VIRGIN ISLAND CATS
Sept.’s hurricanes Irma & Maria hit the U.S. Virgin Islands hard. Dellia Holodenschi, founder of St. Thomas-based Lucky Paws Foundation, braved the storm to save animals. Committed to helping St. Thomas’ cats long before then, she created a Cat Café (feeding) Program in 2007,& founded Lucky Paws in 2008 to lead a growing TNR move-ment. In 2010, she helped found “S/N Island Pets”, providing $ for S/N for low-income residents’ pets. Lucky Paws has facilitated the S/N of some 4,000 cats. When she began, the island had an estimated 1,000 community cats. That # was down to about 400, when hurricanes hit. Lucky Paws will use 60% of an Alley Cat Allies’ Grant on food 4 community cats & low-income residents’ pets; 30% on S/N for nearly 100 cats, & 10% on cat cafés destroyed in the storms, towels, traps, & other supplies.Next, they plan to launch a strong TNR campaign & conduct a mass S/N clinic. https://www.alleycat.org/alley-cat-allies-grant-to-save-cats-as-recovery-from-hurricanes-irma-and-maria-continues/
