TURNING OFF THE SPIGOT
A veterinarian who reports S/N’ing more than 180,000 animals (that is not a typo!) in the last 20 yr & has served on numerous humane society boards, was an animal control officer before becoming a veterinarian, who speaks & consults on companion animal overpopulation issues all over the world, has established full service training hospitals in Bratislava, Slovakia and Merida, Mexico & has trained more than 350 veterinarians in efficient & safe surgical techniques makes a blunt, fervent & likely controversial plea for totally shifting priorities from sheltering animals to turning off the spigot. CANADA 1ST NATION DOGS STERILIZED
To help address a dog overpopulation problem facing Obedjiwan, a 1st Nations community. north of Montreal, Humane Society International/Canada & Chiots Nordiques held a mass S/N clinic, sterilizing & treating 127 dogs (99 were S/N’d) in Dec. 2016. Per HSI/Canada: “We are proud to assist in providing urgently needed care to companion animals, many of them homeless & roaming in remote aboriginal communities. Vet services are often not available in these regions, so our presence is essential. Our free S/N clinics have a lasting, positive impact, helping these communities to effectively & humanely manage street dog populations & prevent dog shoots & other cruel forms of population control.” Since 2013, Chiots Nordiques & HSI/Canada mass clinics have admitted more than 1,000 animals.
