ZERO STRAYS-HOW’D HOLLAND DO IT?
Current news articles are spotlighting Holland as the 1st country to humanely resolve their long standing stray dog problem which they did in 2016. The government (a) implemented “PSVIR” (pick, sterilize, vaccinate, identify, & return),(b) made S/N mandatory & free with exams & needed treatments (c) passed animal protection, health & welfare laws, with violators getting up to 3 yrs in prison & big fines (d) put 250 “Animal Cops” in charge of dog protection & safety, (e) raised taxes on the purchase of dogs, increasing stray adoptions & (f) started a “fostering” campaign, encouraging people to take in homeless dogs. More than a million strays found homes, as 90% of the population adopted a dog. Today, dogs in the Netherlands are reportedly living comfortably in homes, not suffering as strays on the streets & others are taking notice. https://www.thinkinghumanity.com/2019/06/holland-becomes-the-first-country-without-stray-dogs.html &

DON’T MISS THIS NYTIMES ARTICLE
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/22/science/rabies-dogs-india.html A “Mission Rabies”(MR) targeted program of stray dog “capture, vaccinate & release” had good results in India’s unique environment, but a politician urges adding sterilization to the mix. This lengthy article gives an eye opening look @ the size & realities of the challenges & the logic behind the need to do more. First a project of “World Wide Veterinary Service”, “MR”,founded in 2013, begain their work in India where 1/3 of the 59,000 global human rabies deaths occur. There, a 14-city effort vaccinated >61,000 dogs in 25 days! http://www.missionrabies.com/
“THE CAT RESCUERS”- A DOCUMENTARY
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/24/nyregion/gentrifications-latest-victims-new-yorks-feral-cats.html?module=inline: “…a fascinating, difficult topic… and while “The Cat Rescuers” movingly portrays the unique individuals committed to helping these cats, it doesn’t quite tackle the full complexity of this subject.” (Film review by B. Ebiri, NY Times)
