1st covered in our Aug. 2014 issue, this novel new program, funded by a surcharge on fees pet food makers pay to sell in Maryland, has selected its 1st set of 14 S/N grant recipients listed in FY2015 Funded Projects.pdf for $’s totaling $474,785. CANCER RESEARCHER TURNS TO S/N
Harvard bio-engineer David Mooney who developed an implant that activates the immune system to shrink tumors, received a 3 yr $700,000 grant to develop a contraceptive vaccine for dogs & cats. The $ is from the Michelson Found Animals Founda-tion, which also offers a $25 million prize for the 1st team to find an effective nonsurgical sterilization technique. In cancer, an im-planted chip attracts immune cells & teaches them to attack a protein found on tumors. For dog & cat contraception, the immune cells would be taught to attack the reproductive hormone. HOW’S NJ’S 1040 S/N TAX CHECK OFF?
$ 22,291 for tax yr. 2013, up from $21,336 in 2012! 2013 was the 4th tax yr for donating to the Cat & Dog S/N Fund by “x-ing” a box on the NJ 1040, + a $ amt & the Fund’s ID#10. $’s fund low cost S/N’s for pets adopted from shelters & pets of folks on public assistance. Demand far exceeds the $ available. ”Wildlife” again collected the most $ in 2013 @ $210,231. 5 of the 21 charities collected more than S/N in 2013, vs 7 of 20 collecting > S/N in 2012.
ASPCA/HUMANE ALLIANCE MERGER?
“Animals 24-7” reports NY’s ASPCA & Humane Alliance, the largest facilitator of nonprofit S/N surgery, are “engaged”. “I dos” hoped 4 summer.
